The names you meet when moving USDT — TRC20, ERC20, BEP20 — are basically impossible to tell apart the first time you see them. They look a few letters apart, but behind them sit three completely different public chains, with different fees and speeds. This page takes the three most common ones apart: what each is, whether it's cheap, whether it's fast, when to use which, and what happens when the chains don't match.

Three names, really three chains
Start with the thing that's easiest to confuse: TRC20, ERC20 and BEP20 are not three kinds of USDT — they're the versions of USDT issued on three different public chains. The "20" in each comes from each chain's token-standard number; the prefix is what matters —
- TRC20: the T is for TRON. It's TRON's token standard, and TRC20 USDT is USDT running on TRON.
- ERC20: the E is for Ethereum. ERC20 is Ethereum's classic token standard, and ERC20 USDT runs on the Ethereum mainnet.
- BEP20: the B is for BNB Smart Chain (BSC). BEP20 USDT runs on BNB Smart Chain.
All three versions are pegged to one US dollar, so the value is identical. The only difference is that they each run on a different chain — and different chains have different fees, speeds and confirmation rules.
Underneath: what each chain is built for
To understand why the fees differ so much, it helps to glance at how the three chains are designed:
Ethereum (ERC20) is the oldest of the three and has the largest ecosystem, widely regarded as high on security and decentralisation. The trade-off is that its "block space" is relatively tight, so when a lot of people use it at once they bid up the network fee (the gas) to get packed in — which means the fee swings sharply with congestion. It produces a block roughly every twelve seconds.
TRON (TRC20) is designed more around high throughput and low fees, keeping transfer costs at a very low level over the long run, with fast blocks. Because moving USDT on it is both cheap and quick, it became the most-used chain for sending USDT between people and between exchanges.
BNB Smart Chain (BEP20) is driven by the Binance ecosystem and is compatible with Ethereum's smart-contract style (which is why its address format looks the same as Ethereum's), but its fees are usually well below the Ethereum mainnet and it's fast. It's commonly used for apps and transfers within the BSC ecosystem.
One point deserves a flag: BEP20 (BSC) and ERC20 (Ethereum) addresses look almost identical, both a long string starting with 0x. You can't tell which chain it's on from the address alone — and that's exactly the biggest pitfall, covered below.
Fee and speed, side by side
Here's an order-of-magnitude comparison. The network fee is an illustrative range and changes in real time, so go by what your withdrawal page shows at the time:

When to use which
Setting special needs aside, here's a plain way to choose:
- Everyday USDT transfers where you want cheap and fast: prefer TRC20, as long as the receiving address supports TRON. This is the most common choice.
- The other side only gives an Ethereum address, or you want to use it in the Ethereum ecosystem: use ERC20. The fee is acceptable during quiet hours and pricey during busy ones — weigh how urgent it is.
- You're active in the BSC ecosystem and the address you got is a BSC address: use BEP20. Low fee, fast.
At bottom, "which chain the other side supports" always comes first. Fee and speed are a secondary choice made within the set of chains the other side supports. Don't force TRC20 to a TRON-only address because it's cheap if the address only receives ERC20 — that isn't saving money, that's losing it.
The most dangerous case is when the chain you send from doesn't match the chain the receiving address sits on. BEP20 and ERC20 addresses look almost identical in particular, so plenty of people see a 0x prefix and assume any chain will do — that's a misconception. If the other side's chain isn't even listening to the chain you sent on, the coins won't arrive, and most likely can't be recovered. Make sure to: confirm which chain the other side's address is on, set the withdrawal-page network to match it exactly, copy-paste the address and re-check the first and last few characters, and send a small test first for large amounts. Compare the usual networks for cost, speed and compatibility, then confirm the exact network supported by the recipient.
Telling roughly which chain from the address
The start of an address gives a hint, but treat it only as a clue, never as the sole basis:
- A long string starting with T: most likely a TRON (TRC20) address.
- A long string starting with 0x: could be Ethereum (ERC20) or BNB Smart Chain (BEP20) — you can't tell from the address alone. In that case you must ask the other side directly, or read the network clearly labelled on their deposit page.
So the right move isn't to "guess" which chain an address belongs to — it's to have the other side tell you which network the address is on, or read the network label clearly on their deposit page. These three chains usually don't use a memo
While we're here: ordinary USDT transfers on TRC20, ERC20 and BEP20 generally don't need a memo/tag. The ones that need a memo are mostly other coins (XRP, EOS) or certain shared exchange addresses. If a deposit page explicitly asks for a memo, you must fill it in correctly, or the money can reach the platform without being credited to you. FAQ
Can I transfer TRC20 USDT straight to ERC20 USDT?
Not directly on-chain. They're versions of the same USDT on different chains; to move between chains you go through an exchange deposit/withdrawal or a dedicated cross-chain tool — you can't simply send TRC20 USDT to an ERC20 address. Forcing it very likely loses the coins.
Which of the three is cheapest?
For everyday USDT transfers it's usually TRC20 (TRON), with the network fee sitting at a very low level long-term. BEP20 is also low. ERC20 is fine when Ethereum is quiet and clearly pricey when congested. Go by the fee your page shows at the time of transfer.
BEP20 and ERC20 addresses are the same, so does it matter which I pick?
Yes, it matters. The two address looks are similar but they're different chains. If the receiving address is actually on Ethereum and you send on BEP20, the coins very likely won't arrive and most likely can't be recovered. Always confirm which chain the address is really on, then set the withdrawal network to match.
Does the chain I pick change USDT's value?
No. USDT on all three chains is pegged to one US dollar, so the value is the same. Choosing the chain only affects the network fee, speed and whether the other side can receive it — not what the coin itself is worth.
