"Can you get coins back after the wrong chain?" has no single answer — it depends on exactly where you went wrong.

The moment you hit "confirm" on a withdrawal and suddenly realise the chain looks wrong, or the address looks off — that sinking feeling stays with anyone who's had it. On-chain transfers aren't like bank transfers you can claw back. Once coins are sent, whether anything can be salvaged depends entirely on exactly how you went wrong.

This page splits the common "ways to go wrong" apart, with what each one's odds really are and what to do. The most important line first: no one can promise that a wrong chain can be recovered — don't trust anyone offering "I'll recover it for you, just pay a fee up front", which is almost always a follow-on scam. Why on-chain transfers can't be reversed

Start with one underlying fact: once an on-chain transaction is packed and confirmed, it's written into an unchangeable ledger with no "undo" button. There's no human who can reverse it, the way a bank can correct an entry. So "recovery" is never "the system sends it back" — it's about where the coins landed, whether any person or platform controls that place, and whether they're willing to return them. That's why different mistakes end so differently.

A few ways to go wrong, and how each ends

Here are the common cases — find the one that matches yours:

Case 1: wrong chain, but the address format happens to be compatible

The classic example is ERC20 and BEP20: both addresses start with 0x in the same format. Say the address they gave you is an Ethereum (ERC20) address but you sent on BEP20. The coins then land at the same string of characters on the BSC chain. If something controllable sits behind that address — an exchange, or a wallet whose private key someone holds — there may be a chance to recover them by contacting the relevant platform or the address's controller. But that needs the other side's cooperation, the process is often slow, and success isn't guaranteed. If it landed at an address no one controls, there's basically no way back.

Case 2: address mistyped — a non-existent or someone else's address

If you copied the address with a few characters off, there are two outcomes. One: the checksum doesn't match and it's an invalid address, in which case a reputable platform or wallet usually blocks it before you send — a good thing. Two: the mistyped string happens to be a valid address that isn't yours, so the coins went to a stranger and are almost impossible to recover, unless you know them and can persuade them to return it. This is most likely when you type by hand, which is exactly why you should always copy-paste.

Case 3: sent to a contract address that doesn't support the coin

Sometimes people send coins by mistake to a smart-contract address (a token's contract address, say) that wasn't built to receive that coin. These cases are almost always unrecoverable, because the contract won't and can't return the coins to you.

Case 4: exchange to exchange, but on a chain the other side doesn't support

If the receiving exchange doesn't support the chain you sent on at all, the coins won't show up in your deposit history. In this case you can sometimes contact the receiving exchange's support, explain the situation, provide the transaction hash (txid) and similar details, and ask for help recovering them — some platforms have a manual recovery process for specific chains, but it usually takes time, may carry a fee, and is likewise not guaranteed.

Don't rush to a "professional recovery" service

Searching around after an incident, it's easy to run into people claiming "professional on-chain recovery, deposit first" — those are mostly follow-on scams preying on your panic. There are only two legitimate channels: the official support of the platform you withdrew from, and the official support of whoever controls the address the coins finally landed at (an exchange, say). Anyone asking you to pay first, add them privately, or hand over a private key or seed phrase is running a scam. Your private key and seed phrase must never be given to anyone, ever.

If you really did send wrong, what to do first

Take a breath, then go in order:

  1. First, work out exactly what went wrong. Look the transaction up on a block explorer: did it succeed? Which address and which chain did it go to? See Deposit or withdrawal not showing? Check it on a block explorer. Figure out whether it's "still confirming" (maybe not actually sent yet — occasionally cancellable) or "confirmed and landed at the wrong address" (already irreversible).
  2. Save the transaction hash (txid) and screenshots. You'll need them for every later contact with a platform.
  3. Contact official support and explain honestly. Open a ticket through the official channel of the platform you withdrew from, and (if you know it) the official channel of the platform the coins landed at, attaching the txid. Whether they can recover it is theirs to verify — be patient, and don't be pushed into paying a third party.
  4. Manage expectations. Be prepared for "may not be recoverable". If you're lucky and it can be recovered, that often takes time too.
Check the address one more time

Check whether the address format fits the selected network. This is only a format hint; the recipient and platform pages remain the final reference.

What actually works is prevention: two habits

Recovery is luck; prevention is habit. Make the two below a fixed part of every withdrawal and you'll block the great majority of incidents:

Habit one: send a small test. For a large amount, send a tiny amount first, wait for the other side to confirm it truly arrived, then send the rest. One extra network fee buys you a large transfer that doesn't go wrong. Experienced users do this almost reflexively, especially the first time sending to a new address or onto an unfamiliar chain.

Habit two: check the network, copy-paste the address, compare the ends. Before withdrawing, confirm two things — the network selected on the withdrawal page matches the chain the address is on exactly, and the address is copy-pasted, never typed by hand, then re-check the first and last few characters after pasting (in case malware tampered with the clipboard).
